Sailor Anne:
Our very own intrepid sailor, Anne Williams has been valiantly engaged in an absorbing yacht race as a crew member on westernaustralia2011.com one of the 10 same class boats in the recent Clipper 07 - 08 Round The World yacht race.
Anne spent some time training in the UK late last year and joined the Perth / Singapore/China leg departing Fremantle on New Years Day, togehter with 17 other crew members on their 68 foot yacht, heading for the island of Batam, just off Singapore. Over the following 2 weeks a tremendous battle developed, as all boats worked around the clock trying to extract maximum speed out of constantly changing conditions. After a weeks stopover in Singapore the fleet set sail north for China. The 3 week passage to Qingdao brought tougher conditions as they sailed into constant headwinds in difficult seas and lower and lower temperatures!.
Crews arrived to a magnificent fanfare in Qingdao – red carpet, fireworks, a media frenzy and televised banquet ceremonies.
Congratulations Anne on successfully competing in such a fantastic event. I'm sure you will be an inspiration to our other budding yachties at Essence!!!

Quarterly Challenge: Step Up for MS!
Every quarter we challenge our members to comit to an event to train towards. This quarter the event is ... UP STEP for MS.
On Sunday June 8, 2008 hundreds of people will head to the top of Perth’s tallest building – Central Park for the second annual Step Up for MS.
It’ll be a fun-run with a difference as you take on 53 flights or 1,096 stairs on a journey to the sky!
Last year 480 people committed to conquering the tower and raising funds for MS. And, many more generous West Aussies supported their colleagues, family and friends by donating online.

Members of the Month
Every one is an achiever at ELC but every month there are a few members who really need to be recognized for the fantastic results they have achieved. Firstly as a way of congratulating them on their results and more importantly to inspire and remind the rest of us of just why we do it!
So … meet our models of excellence
Rehabilitation:
EXERCISE AND DIABETES
We know our health is in crisis when words like globesity are being used to describe the extent of world weight problems. When chronic life-threatening conditions are combining their effects, like the recently coined ‘diabesity’. Not just diabetes. Not just obesity. Or when our ailments start sounding more like James Bond villains than enemies to our wellbeing, like ‘Syndrome X’ (a combination of obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes which can multiply your chances of premature death six fold). Diabetes is perhaps the most concerning of these conditions, with 1,000,000 Australians affected and an alarming 50% of these unaware of their condition.
